View printableWhat is on this woodland deer and friends coloring page?
A smiling spotted deer stands in the center of the drawing, surrounded by four woodland companions. An owl perches on a tree branch above, while a rabbit sits on the ground to the left. On the right, a squirrel holds an acorn, and a hedgehog sits near the bottom of the picture.
Trees frame the scene, with leafy branches overhead and pointed evergreen trees farther back. Flowers, mushrooms, leaves, grass and small stones fill spaces around the animals. The deer has outlined spots on its back, large ears and small antlers; the squirrel has a large curling tail, and the hedgehog has a spiky outline.
Before choosing colors, look from the top of the picture to the bottom. Which character does your child notice first? They might start with the owl in the tree, the deer in the middle or a small flower near the border. There is no need to finish every detail in one sitting.
Four woodland coloring and activity ideas
1. Choose colors for the animal friends
Begin with the deer’s broad body. A light brown coat and darker antlers are one possible combination; the outlined spots can stay white or be filled with a contrasting color. Color gently around the eyes and smile so the facial lines remain easy to see.
Try a gray or brown rabbit, a reddish squirrel and a softly shaded hedgehog. For the owl, use one shade for its body and another for the wings or the feather shapes on its chest. These are only suggestions: a purple deer or a blue squirrel can belong in an imaginary woodland too.
2. Explore patterns and textures
The deer’s spots, the owl’s feather marks and the hedgehog’s spikes provide different kinds of lines to follow. Compare the round spots with the short pointed marks on the hedgehog. A colored pencil can help reach small spaces, while a crayon can cover a larger animal body more quickly.
Look at the squirrel’s tail and the rabbit’s long ears. Your child can add light shading inside these larger shapes, leaving a little white paper visible. If they want extra patterns, they could draw small lines or dots inside an animal’s outline and decide which parts to leave plain.
3. Search, point and count
Take turns giving clues based on the picture: “Find the animal holding an acorn,” or “Point to the animal sitting on a branch.” Then look for the mushrooms and flowers near the bottom. A child can answer by pointing, naming a detail or selecting a color for it.
For a counting game, touch each visible flower or mushroom once as you move across the page. Let your child decide where to begin and check the drawing together if a detail is missed. You can also compare the large foreground animals with the smaller trees in the background, remembering that this is a cartoon scene rather than a scale diagram.
4. Give the woodland a story
Ask what the friends might say to one another. Perhaps the squirrel wants to show everyone its acorn, or the owl has spotted something from its branch. These are imagined events inspired by the picture. Your child can name a character, choose a favorite animal and decide what happens next.
Write a short caption on a separate piece of paper, or invite your child to tell the story aloud. If they want to add a winding path, a stream or another animal, explain that these are new, imaginary details they can draw themselves; those objects are not shown in the original picture.
Start small: choose one animal and one detail nearby. You can pause there or return to the trees, flowers and other friends later.
How to save and print the woodland picture
- Select Download Coloring Image to access the original WebP file. If it opens in your browser, use the browser’s save-image option.
- Select Print Coloring Page to use the site’s image-printing tool. If it is unavailable, open the full-size image and print it from your browser.
- Choose A4 or US Letter paper and portrait orientation. Select fit-to-page scaling to preserve the image’s proportions.
- Check the print preview to make sure the border, owl, animals and flowers are visible before printing a copy.
The original image measures 1055 × 1491 pixels. Its shape is close to A4 portrait proportions; US Letter may leave different margins. Printer settings also affect the final margins. Avoid stretching the picture to fill the sheet, since that changes the shapes of the animals.
Enlarging the file beyond its original resolution cannot add detail and may make the outlines look softer. A test copy lets you check the size and print quality. Standard printer paper can be used with crayons or colored pencils. If using markers, test for bleeding and protect the surface underneath.
For another group of animals, visit the farm animals by a barn coloring page. You can compare the woodland setting with the barnyard scene or browse the coloring pages collection for another subject.
