What is on this mermaid and underwater castle coloring page?

A smiling mermaid fills the center of the picture. She waves one hand, and a star-shaped decoration sits in her flowing hair. Her tail has rows of curved scales and a large fin with long lines inside it. A shell-shaped top adds another detail to color.

To one side stands an underwater castle with pointed towers, flags, windows and an arched door. A fish, a seahorse and a jellyfish appear around the mermaid. Near the bottom, a crab sits between a starfish and shells. One open shell holds a round pearl, while a spiral shell rests on the other side.

Look around the scene before choosing a starting point. Bubbles float through the water, and sea plants and coral-like shapes rise from the seabed. The mermaid’s hair and tail offer broad spaces, while the castle windows, shell lines and small bubbles invite more careful coloring. A child can color one favorite part and leave the rest for another day.

Four ways to explore the underwater picture

1. Create a pattern on the mermaid’s tail

Choose two or three colors for the scales and repeat them in a pattern. For example, alternate turquoise and purple, or use several shades of green. Another option is to color the upper scales lightly and make the colors deeper toward the fin. There is no required palette for this imaginary character.

Give the large tail fin a different shade, then follow its long curved lines with a colored pencil. The star in the mermaid’s hair can match the starfish near the bottom or stand out in a contrasting color. Try the colors on spare paper first if your child wants to see how they look together.

2. Find and compare the sea creatures

Find the fish, seahorse, jellyfish and crab. Notice the fish’s stripes, the seahorse’s curled tail, the jellyfish’s hanging tentacles and the crab’s raised claws. Your child can point to each creature, choose one to color first or describe the shape that catches their attention.

For a simple observation game, take turns giving clues such as “Find the creature with claws” or “Find the animal with a curled tail.” Then compare the shapes of the fish’s fins with the mermaid’s tail fin. These are cartoon drawings, so the details are meant for looking and imagining rather than identifying exact species.

3. Design the castle and its surroundings

Choose one color for the castle walls and another for the pointed roofs. The flags can share a color with the mermaid’s hair decoration, while the door and windows can have their own shades. Use a pencil around the narrow tower outlines, then fill the larger wall areas with a crayon if preferred.

Move down to the seabed and give the shells different patterns. The open shell could have a pale pink interior and a lightly shaded pearl; the spiral shell could be colored from its center outward. Sea plants can use several greens, or your child can choose unexpected colors for a make-believe underwater garden.

4. Count, tell a story and add a caption

Invite your child to count the castle flags, bubbles or shells they can find. Move across the page in one direction and point to each detail once. Because some small shapes may be interpreted differently, let the picture guide the count and talk about what each person included.

Imagine why the mermaid is waving. Perhaps she is welcoming a visitor to the castle or greeting the seahorse. Those events are stories inspired by the picture, not actions shown in it. Ask your child to choose a name for the castle and dictate a short caption for an adult to write on a separate sheet.

If your child wants to add a treasure chest or another sea creature, explain that it is a new imaginary detail they are drawing themselves. They can add it in an open space or on a separate piece of paper without covering the existing picture.

Start small: Choose the mermaid’s tail and one sea creature first. The castle, shells and smaller details can wait until another coloring session.

How to save and print the mermaid picture

  1. Select Download Coloring Image to access the original WebP file. If it opens in your browser, use the browser’s save-image option.
  2. Select Print Coloring Page to use the site’s image-printing tool. If it is unavailable, open the full-size image and print from your browser.
  3. Choose portrait orientation and A4 or US Letter paper. Select fit-to-page scaling and preserve the original proportions.
  4. Check the print preview to make sure the mermaid, castle, shells and complete outer border are visible before printing.

The original image measures 1054 × 1492 pixels. Its shape is close to an A4 portrait page; margins will depend on the paper and printer settings. US Letter paper has different proportions and may leave different margins. Avoid stretching the image to fill the sheet, because this changes the shapes in the drawing.

Enlarging a digital image does not add detail and can make the outlines look softer. Try one print first and adjust the scale if needed. Crayons suit the broader areas of the tail and castle, while colored pencils offer more control around the flags, windows and bubbles. If using markers, test them on spare paper and protect the surface underneath.

When you are ready for another activity, explore the coloring pages collection. For a different imaginary character, see the turtle in a wizard hat coloring page.
