What is on this dinosaur and volcano coloring page?

A smiling long-necked dinosaur fills the foreground of this cartoon scene. Rounded spots decorate its body, a row of rounded plates follows its neck and back, and its tail curves upward on the right. Broad spaces across the body provide room for larger strokes, while the spots, toes and facial features offer smaller areas to explore.

A volcano rises behind the dinosaur, with flowing shapes near its summit and a plume above the opening. A flying reptile stretches its wings across the sky. On the left, a curved palm-like tree carries large leaves and round fruit. Bushes, pointed leaves, grass tufts and rocks fill the surrounding landscape.

Look over the whole picture before choosing a starting point. Your child may want to color the dinosaur first, begin with the volcano, or focus on the flying character. This is an imaginative illustration: it does not identify a dinosaur species or establish the real colors of the animals shown.

Five coloring and storytelling ideas

1. Give the dinosaur a contrasting spot pattern

Choose one color for the dinosaur’s body and another for its rounded spots. A pale green body with purple spots creates one playful combination; light blue and orange offer another. Test both colors on spare paper before filling a large area. Light pressure makes it easier to add another layer later.

Your child can repeat one spot color across the body or alternate between two shades. Try a separate color along the rounded plates, then decide whether the underside of the neck and tail should match. There is no need to make the pattern symmetrical or use every pencil in the box.

2. Create a bright volcano behind a softer dinosaur

Use warm colors such as yellow, orange or red in the flowing shapes near the volcano’s summit. A brown or gray mountain gives those bright areas a clear background. Keeping the dinosaur lighter can help the two main subjects stand apart without making every section equally bold.

The plume can remain white or receive a light gray shade. Follow its rounded outline slowly and leave some white space if desired. Treat the volcano as part of the picture’s pretend setting; the smiling character is not a guide to how real animals would behave around volcanic activity.

3. Explore the leaves, rocks and sky

Pick two greens for the plants. Use one on the large leaves beside the tree and another on the low bushes around the dinosaur. Your child might add a third shade to the narrow leaves in the foreground, or keep them simple and repeat the original two colors. Either approach can create a finished-looking scene.

Try brown or gray on the rocks and a gentle earth color on the ground. Leave the clouds white and shade around them with a light blue pencil. Work in small sections to avoid feeling that the entire sky must be completed at once. The flying reptile can become a bright accent above the landscape.

4. Follow lines and compare shapes

Follow the dinosaur’s long neck with a finger held just above the paper, then follow the curve of its tail. Compare these sweeping lines with the pointed leaves and angular wings above. Look for rounded spots on the body and smaller rounded shapes elsewhere in the drawing.

For a counting activity, choose a manageable group, such as the round fruit on the tree or a few spots on one section of the dinosaur. Touch each shape once while counting. Let your child check the picture themselves, and stop whenever they would rather return to coloring.

5. Imagine a meeting in the prehistoric landscape

Ask what the dinosaur might be looking at and whether the flying character has come to say hello. Perhaps they are choosing names for the plants, finding interesting stones or planning a pretend adventure. These are story ideas your child adds to the scene, rather than events already established by the picture.

Give the dinosaur a name and invent a short beginning, middle and ending together. An adult can write a dictated caption on a separate sheet. Display it beside the finished picture, or save both in an activity folder. A second print can inspire a new story with a completely different color palette.

Start with three colors: choose one for the dinosaur, one for its spots and one for the volcano. Add more when your child is ready to explore the background.

How to save and print the dinosaur picture

  1. Select Download Coloring Image to access the original WebP file. If the picture opens in your browser, use its save-image option.
  2. Select Print Coloring Page to use the site’s image-printing tool. If the tool is unavailable, open the full-size image and print from your browser.
  3. Choose portrait orientation and A4 or US Letter paper. Use fit-to-page scaling to preserve the original proportions.
  4. Inspect the preview to make sure the rounded border, flying reptile, dinosaur and foreground plants are included before printing.

The original image measures 1055 × 1491 pixels. Its proportions are close to A4 portrait paper, while US Letter may leave different margins. Avoid stretching the picture to remove white space. Increasing the print size does not add detail and may make the outlines appear softer.

Crayons work well on the dinosaur’s broad body and the mountain. Colored pencils offer more control around the spots, toes and narrow plant leaves. If using markers, test them first and place a protective sheet underneath. Choose paper supported by your printer and print one test copy before preparing several sheets.

For another friendly dinosaur activity, try the dinosaur holding a flower coloring page. Compare the flower scene with this volcanic landscape, or browse the coloring pages collection to choose a different subject.
