View printableExplore the owl’s shapes
This front-facing owl has very large circular eyes, a pointed beak, broad wings and rows of scalloped lines across its chest. Its feet sit below the rounded body. A name line appears above the owl, and source marks are present near the bottom of the original image. Preserve the complete image when printing.
The strong outlines separate the face, wings and body into useful areas to color. Notice how the scalloped lines repeat across the chest, while nested circles surround the eyes. Start with whichever region catches your attention; a partially colored owl can still be a finished choice.
Design a feather palette
Select two or three colors for the chest and repeat them across the scalloped rows. For example, try cream and brown, or make a bright teal and yellow owl. Color lightly around the dark outlines so the printed feather pattern stays clear. There is no required palette for this cartoon.
The eye circles can contrast with the face and wings. Leave the dark pupils and their small light highlights visible, and use a pencil around the narrower rings. On the wings, broader crayon strokes give a different texture from the smaller pencil marks on the chest.
Find repeated lines
Look at the left and right wings, then compare the circles around the two eyes. Ask which shapes appear on both sides and which lines curve downward. This is a comparison of the illustration, and the two sides do not need to be colored identically.
Follow one row of chest scallops with a finger above the page, then pick a repeating color sequence. Count the visible scallops if you like, touching each one once without assuming a fixed total. Change the sequence on the next row and see how the effect changes.
Make a character
Use the printed name line to give the owl a name, or write one on a separate label. Imagine what the wide-eyed character has noticed and tell a short story with a beginning and an ending. The story is your invention; the illustration itself does not show the event.
If you want to place the owl somewhere, add an imaginary tree or night sky around it after printing. Those are additions, not existing elements of the picture. Keep the name line and original source marks clear, and decide whether your owl is calm, curious or surprised.
Saving and printing the original image
Use Download Coloring Image for the original WebP. If your browser opens the image instead of saving it, use the browser’s save-image command. The Print Coloring Page button uses the site’s printing tool. If that tool is unavailable, open the full-size image and print directly from your browser.
Choose portrait orientation on A4 or US Letter paper, and select fit to page. Check the preview before printing: the complete picture and source marks should remain visible. Preserve proportions instead of stretching the picture across the sheet. Margins vary with the paper and printer, so some white space around the image is normal.
The original measures 1200 × 1767 pixels. Enlarging the image cannot add detail and may soften its lines; a smaller print can appear sharper. Try one copy first. Ordinary printer paper is an option for crayons and pencils. Test markers on spare paper for bleed-through and use only paper supported by your printer.
To choose another character, visit the coloring pages collection. You can also explore the farm animals by a barn picture and compare its group scene with this single character.
