A seated zebra with a tall mane, narrow stripes and a tufted tail. Look at the whole picture before choosing a starting point. Notice the character’s expression and the different shapes in its outline. Your child can point to a favorite area, select a color for it, and return to the rest later.

Some parts of the picture offer broad spaces, while others contain smaller lines. Compare these areas before choosing a tool. A light first layer can keep the printed outlines visible, and any colors can be changed or combined according to the child’s preference.

Four coloring and observation ideas

Choose a stripe style

The zebra’s body and legs contain many narrow stripes. Keep the existing black and white look, add soft gray between the lines, or invent a colorful zebra using two favorite pencils. White areas are part of the design and do not all need to be filled.

Start on one leg or a small part of the neck. Use short strokes that follow the direction of the printed stripes. A fine pencil can reach narrow areas, and a break is welcome when the repeated lines become tiring.

Compare the mane and tail

The tall mane rises above the zebra’s face, while a thin tail curls to one side and ends in a tuft. Compare the long pointed mane shapes with the smaller tuft at the end of the tail. Choose matching colors or make each feature different.

To keep the fine lines visible, try a light layer first. A darker shade can be added gradually. Test pencil pressure on spare paper before coloring the smallest spaces, especially around the face.

Find stripes in different directions

Look at the stripes on the zebra’s face, neck and legs. Their directions change to follow the shapes of the character. Point to a curved stripe and then to a straighter one. Follow each with a finger above the page rather than marking it.

Choose a few adjacent spaces and make a simple alternating color pattern. Ask what shade comes next, then let your child change the plan if desired. There are many marks, so select a small group rather than trying to count every stripe.

Give the zebra a story

The zebra sits facing forward with a friendly expression. Ask what it might be waiting for, or give it a name and a favorite color. These answers are imaginary; the illustration does not show a particular event.

A child may add a made-up landscape on the blank space or a separate sheet. Explain that grass, trees or other animals would be new additions to this picture. Keep the printed website name visible and leave any part unfinished if preferred.

Save and print the picture

The original file is 736 × 1173 pixels. Choose portrait orientation on A4 or US Letter paper, then select fit to page and check the preview. Paper proportions and printer margins may leave white space around the illustration. Avoid stretching the image to fill the sheet, because stretching changes the shapes.

Enlarging the file does not add detail and may make the outlines look softer. If a page-filling print is not as clear as you would like, try a smaller size. Print one test copy before making more. The website name at the bottom is part of the original image and should remain visible in the preview.

Standard printer paper is an option for crayons or colored pencils. Pencils are useful for narrow outlined areas; a crayon can cover larger spaces. Test markers on spare paper, since ink may bleed through, and protect the surface underneath. Select paper that your printer supports.
