A peacock with a crest spreads patterned feathers in a fan. Look at the whole picture before choosing a starting point. Notice the character’s expression and the different shapes in its outline. Your child can point to a favorite area, select a color for it, and return to the rest later.
Some parts of the picture offer broad spaces, while others contain smaller lines. Compare these areas before choosing a tool. A light first layer can keep the printed outlines visible, and any colors can be changed or combined according to the child’s preference.
Four coloring and observation ideas
Build a feather palette
The peacock’s fan spreads behind its body, with eye-shaped markings near the feather ends. Pick two or three colors and repeat them across the fan. Blue, green and gold are one possible combination; pink, purple and orange make an entirely imaginary version.
Start at one side and work toward the other, or color a few feather tips first and return later. The outlines are close together in places, so a sharpened colored pencil may be easier to control than a broad crayon.
Compare the feather markings
Look at the oval shapes inside the fan. Some contain a smaller dark center, while others are open. Point to a pair that look similar and then find a marking that looks different. Discuss only what appears in this stylized picture.
Try coloring the outer oval in one shade and the inner area in another. Leaving a ring white can make the pattern stand out. Count the visible markings if your child wishes, checking the drawing instead of relying on a suggested number.
Color the bird and crest
The bird has a rounded head, a small beak, a feathered crest and a wing in front of its body. Choose a body color that contrasts with the fan, or repeat a favorite feather color on the crest. The eyes and smile can remain visible without coloring over the black lines.
The wing gives your child another space to experiment. Use a light shade there and a darker shade on the body, or leave the wing uncolored. Compare the smaller crest shapes with the larger fan behind the bird.
Create a pattern challenge
Take turns choosing a feather marking and naming a color for it. Repeat the colors in a simple sequence across several feathers, then let your child decide whether to continue or change the design. The task can end after a few shapes.
For a story, imagine why the peacock is displaying its fan and give it a name. These are invented ideas. If your child draws flowers or a garden around the bird, describe them as additions; those objects are not part of this original drawing.
Save and print the picture
The original file is 736 × 1174 pixels. Choose portrait orientation on A4 or US Letter paper, then select fit to page and check the preview. Paper proportions and printer margins may leave white space around the illustration. Avoid stretching the image to fill the sheet, because stretching changes the shapes.
Enlarging the file does not add detail and may make the outlines look softer. If a page-filling print is not as clear as you would like, try a smaller size. Print one test copy before making more. The website name at the bottom is part of the original image and should remain visible in the preview.
Standard printer paper is an option for crayons or colored pencils. Pencils are useful for narrow outlined areas; a crayon can cover larger spaces. Test markers on spare paper, since ink may bleed through, and protect the surface underneath. Select paper that your printer supports.
