The locomotive has a large smiling face on its circular front. Its eyebrows curve above wide eyes, and an open mouth gives the engine a cheerful expression. A tall chimney rises behind the face, with rounded puffs above it. The cab sits toward the back beneath a curved roof, and a broad slatted cowcatcher fills the lower front.
The railway tracks run diagonally across the foreground. Visible wheels are joined by a long connecting rod, creating a different set of lines from the rails and sleepers below. Behind the engine are low hills, a leafy tree, scattered grass, and clouds. A smiling sun occupies the upper left corner.
This is a cartoon locomotive, so the face and friendly sun belong to an imaginative scene. Look at the whole picture before starting. A child might prefer the sun’s broad circle, the large engine face, or the narrow rail sections; any of these can be a useful place to begin.
Four ways to explore this picture
Build a bold engine color scheme
Try red for the main engine body and deep blue for the cab, then give the roof a third color. Leave the smiling front lighter so the printed expression remains prominent. A gray chimney can stand apart from a colorful boiler without needing to match a particular real train.
The connecting rod can share a color with the wheel rims, or stand out in a pale metallic gray. Use a lighter layer in narrow areas rather than covering the black outlines. The front cowcatcher has long separated spaces that can repeat the engine colors in an alternating pattern.
Follow the track across the paper
Point to a rail near the bottom edge and follow it toward the engine. Look for the short crosspieces underneath and compare their direction with the rails. Then find the long rod running across the wheels. All are straight features, but they belong to different parts of the picture.
If counting is appealing, count only the wheel circles or sleepers that can actually be seen. Some are partly hidden by the engine or cut off at the edge. There is no need to guess the parts behind the train or beyond the page.
Separate steam from clouds
Find the rounded puffs rising directly from the chimney, then look for the separate cloud shapes in the sky. Their outlines are similar, but their locations explain their roles in the scene. Use a very light blue around white clouds and a faint gray along the steam edges if you want to distinguish them.
Keep the tree and hills softer than the engine by using lighter pressure. A yellow sun can become a bright upper corner that balances the large locomotive below. Grass tufts can remain simple green accents instead of turning the entire ground into a solid block of color.
Give the engine a short adventure
Invent a name for the smiling locomotive and imagine what it says as it moves along the track. Ask what might happen after this moment. A station, passengers, or extra carriages are not shown; identify these clearly as ideas for a new story rather than details in the original illustration.
An adult can write the engine’s greeting on a separate sheet. Your child could also make a gentle rhythm while pointing to the visible wheels. Stop after a favorite part is finished if interest fades; completing every sleeper and background shape is not required.
Save and print the complete drawing
The original image is a WebP file measuring 1024 × 1536 pixels. Use Download Coloring Image to access that file. Some browsers open an image instead of saving it automatically; if that happens, use the browser’s save-image command or the full-size link. The file provided here is not a PDF.
For printing, choose portrait orientation and select the paper actually loaded in your printer. A4 and US Letter are possible paper choices, rather than fixed dimensions of this image. Choose fit-to-page scaling with the original proportions preserved. Check all outer edges in the preview and keep any original source marks visible. White margins are preferable to cropping away part of the drawing.
The print button uses the site’s image-printing tool. If it does not respond, open the full-size image and print that image from your browser rather than printing the complete article. In the preview, confirm that only the drawing is selected. Browser headers and footers can usually be disabled in the print settings if they appear.
Enlarging a raster image does not add detail. If lines appear soft at a large size, choose a smaller print instead of stretching the picture. Colored pencils are useful for the smaller outlined spaces; crayons can cover larger areas. Test markers on spare paper, use a protective sheet underneath, and choose materials compatible with your printer paper.
